Message from the Director
The M.A. in Transformational Urban Leadership may be the only academic program in the world focused on transformative movements among the one billion people living in slums and shantytowns. Its goal is to train leaders in entrepreneurial multiplication of grassroots initiatives and church movements that instill hope, set people free from sin, bring family transformation, create jobs, increase educational access, improve health services, and advocate for basic rights.
The next cohort begins September 2012 in Los Angeles at APU’s Los Angeles Regional Center in downtown L.A. Students will take classes, live in a neighboring community with other MATUL students, and partner with a local church. Then, they spend two years living abroad while attending a partnering educational institution or with a cluster of students in partnership with a mission agency in a city.
Six to eight months of intensive language and culture learning are followed by extensive coursework that blends online learning with fieldwork, complemented by theological and socio-economic analysis from global and local literature. Specialized, mentored internships address the development challenges of slum schooling, primary health, community economics, advocacy for land and housing rights, and outreach to marginalized populations.
If you would like to know more about the MATUL program, please feel free to email us at email@example.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Viv Grigg, Ph.D.
