About the Program

Why This Major Is Relevant

Our modern society is facing a multitude of challenges, from religious and political division, to environmental hazards, to economic woes. As we face and attempt to overcome them, historians play a critical role in providing our leaders with the complete historical context they need to make grounded decisions. History-minded professionals ensure that we avoid revisiting past mistakes on an individual, organizational, and national level. Whether as political leaders, preservers of our past, or advocates for change, APU history majors are uniquely positioned to provide the expertise our society needs to address its most pressing problems.

Gain In-depth Learning Experiences

Depending upon individual career goals, APU history majors can tailor the curriculum to focus more heavily on either history or political science coursework. Historical topics include California history, medieval Islam and the Middle East, and enlightened Europe. Political science topics include constitutional law, classical political thought, and history and politics of the non-Western world. In addition, students can take advantage of internship opportunities with museums, schools, research institutions, and other universities.
