About the Program
Why This Major Is Relevant
We live in an increasingly diverse, polarized, and complex society. Our lives are constantly touched and challenged by the issues that arise from this complexity - issues like poverty, globalization, and war. Theater artists play a critical role in helping others to process the struggles and joys of existence. Theater arts graduates challenge others to rise above the day-to-day and deal with matters of conscience, beauty, and the soul, and in the process make an impact on the very society they seek to reflect.
Gain In-Depth Learning Experiences
APU theater arts majors are presented with many venues through which they can hone their skills. The theater department currently performs 8-10 main stage productions per year, ranking among the leaders in providing students with opportunities to practice their craft. Degree coursework culminates in a capstone project, in which students produce a short film or play, write a creative or critical work, or create a reel or creative portfolio, ensuring that students graduate with tangible proof of their skills. In addition, students often take advantage of nearby Hollywood and faculty contacts to secure entry-level theater, film, and television internship positions. These opportunities provide theater arts majors with a first-hand view of production processes, ensuring that students graduate with experience on their resumes and contacts in the field.
