Journaling Exercises: Sophomore Year

Mark 6:30-31

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

Pursuing Your Dreams

Take time out of your busy schedule, pop a bowl of popcorn, and sit yourself down with a copy of the movie Rudy or Flashdance. These movies share the stories of two individuals who did not give up on their dreams.

What are your dreams? After the credits roll and you've finished the last kernel of popcorn, take 10 minutes to write down the dreams that you'd like to pursue in your life no matter how unattainable you may think that they are. Be sure to revisit this list often and never give up your dreams.

Remembering Mentors and Mentoring Moments

A mentor is someone who listens and provides support, counsel, and friendship. Do you have any mentors in your life? APU’s Office of Student Life oversees two mentoring programs. Contact Mark Sanford (msanford@apu.edu) for information about D-groups. Gladys Wilson (gwilson@apu.edu) has information about the Heart to Heart Program for women.

If you do not currently have a mentor, maybe you have had mentoring moments throughout your life in which someone gave you guidance or helped you to see something in yourself, whether it be something you are good at or a time when you were joyful.

Take a few minutes to reflect on a mentoring moment. Who was with you? What did you learn about yourself in that moment? How has it influenced your life since?

Slowing Down

As you are approaching the half way point of your college career, take a few moments to reflect what has happened in the past year or so. How have those experiences shaped your thinking about service in Christ’s Chuch?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't take a look around once in a while, you might miss it."

– Ferris Bueller, from the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
