A native of North Carolina, Rod Cathey, DMA, discovered his aptitude for and interest in music at age 8, when he joined the children’s choir at his church. After enrolling as an undergraduate student at APU (then APC), Cathey studied voice with Marvin McKissick and Lois Wells, and conducting with Gary Bonner at APU, and also with Michael Deane Lamkin at Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Cathey was granted the Fiske Memorial Tuition Fellowship during his time studying at CGU. Cathey directed the APU Men’s Chorale for 10 years; under his direction, the chorale performed in hundreds of concerts throughout the western and northwestern United States, as well as in Canada and Romania. He conducted University Choir and Orchestra for five years, leading the ensemble on tours to the Pacific Northwest; New York; Washington, DC; Virginia; Canada; and Mexico. Under Dr. Cathey’s leadership, the ensemble released two custom recordings: Pure Joy and Music of Heaven. In 2004, Dr. Cathey founded the APU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, a very dynamic and popular ensemble enjoyed by audiences both on and off campus.

Cathey is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
