A native of North Carolina, Rod Cathey, DMA, discovered his aptitude for and interest in music at age 8, when he joined the children’s choir at his church. After participation in school choirs and bands, Cathey studied with Marvin McKissick, Lois Wells, and Gary Bonner at APU, and earned the Fiske Memorial Tuition Fellowship during his time studying at Claremont Graduate University. Cathey directed the APU Men’s Chorale for 10 years; under his direction, the chorale performed in hundreds of concerts throughout the western and northwestern United States, as well as in Canada and Romania. He has conducted University Choir and Orchestra for the last five years, leading the ensemble on tours to the Pacific Northwest; New York; Washington, DC; Virginia; Canada; and Mexico. The ensemble recently released two custom recordings—Pure Joy and Music of Heaven—and Cathey is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
