Before coming to APU, Terry Dobson, MFA, served as adjunct faculty at Loyola Marymount University and California State University, Los Angeles. During two decades as creative director for the Walt Disney Company, Dobson, a British native, won a Themed Entertainment industry award for Walt Disney Imagineering, an Interactive Academy Award for Disney Interactive Studios, and four online gaming awards for Disney Parks and Resorts Online. He was also inaugurated into the Disney Inventor’s Club and awarded a patent for design and technological innovation. His diverse interdisciplinary background has shaped his teaching philosophy to focus on the liminal space where fine art and design intersect. He encourages all students—not just designers—to become intellectual visual connectors who see similarities and possibilities to communicate visually. His sustainable approach to design education prepares students for the responsibility of equalizing the graphic landscape of the future. By instilling a conscientious graphic voice and discernment for caring about how and what they create, he helps transform designers into agents for social change whose potential goes far beyond service to consumerism.
