Community Forums: Planning Discussions

September 1, 2002

Dear Neighbors,

What a great community we live in! The city of Azusa is home to thousands of caring, compassionate, involved citizens. During the first week in October, it was my pleasure to meet many of these dynamic people at APU’s Community Listening Forums. At these two meetings, the Azusa community gathered together to share opinions and offer suggestions as we work to finalize the university’s proposed campus development plan. It was a great success! Creative ideas and potential concerns were discussed and deliberated in small groups. You told us about your priorities and your dreams. You voiced concerns and praises. And we listened. Here are a few of the suggestions we heard:

• Traffic/Safety:

As the university and the community grow, it is important to keep noise and traffic controlled, and maintain safety standards. Suggestions included ideas to ease vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and keep safety a priority.

• Development:

Physical growth means new buildings and renovations. Azusa citizens offered suggestions to help keep the architectural standards consistent with the city’s plan and create an inviting environment.

• Community:

APU hosts several programs that involve the community. Local residents voiced the desire to strengthen that connection through better communication regarding existing programs as well as more and varied programs, events, and shared facilities.

I want to thank all who attended for your time and input. Because of your willingness to participate in these important planning meetings, our campus development plan can be more sensitive to the needs of our neighbors and reflect their vision. The process benefited greatly from your collaboration. And as we move forward, there will be more opportunities for dialog.

Please come back again for the Planning Discussions to see how your input has been incorporated into the initial campus plan proposal. This is the time to see how great things can happen when a community works together, and how your participation has made a difference.
