Forensic Assessment

This course is designed to provide substantive coverage of forensic mental health assessment. The course presents the psychological and legal conceptual framework for applying forensic instruments and forensically relevant instruments to answer questions presented by a civil, family, or criminal court. This course covers foundational issues in Forensic Mental Health Assessment, such as forensic ethics, multicultural considerations, basic forensic assessment methodology, and assessment of response styles and dissimulation. In addition, the course will address relevant legal concepts and landmark cases that substantially shape the delivery of forensic mental health assessment. This course will give the student the professional knowledge and education to be ready to conduct forensic assessments under supervision. Students will learn the basics of conducting the following evaluation types: 1) competency to stand trial; 2) mental status at the time of the offense, and criminal responsibility; 3) violence risk assessment; 4) sex offender risk assessment; 5) death penalty mitigation; and 6) personal injury. This course will provide the necessary academic foundation to pursue more advanced training in forensic psychology. Prerequisite: PPSY 770
