This course provides an introduction to the field of substance abuse and substance abuse therapy. The nature and scope of addiction is defined, DSM-IV-TR criteria for substance-related disorders are reviewed, an overview of drug types is provided, etiological theories of substance abuse are examined, assessment procedures to determine the presence of substance abuse are reviewed, population-specific risks for substance abuse are addressed, and treatment issues are considered.
