James T. Noftle, Ed.D., is an associate professor in the Advanced Studies in Education Department in the School of Education. His twenty-seven years of teaching and administrative experience bring a practical understanding and broad knowledge base to the students and faculty at APU. He served as an elementary school teacher, special education teacher, assistant principal, Director of the Sylvan Learning Center, and ten years in higher education.

Prior to APU, Jim was the Elementary Education Coordinator and Director of Graduate Reading Programs at Eastern Nazarene College, in Quincy, Massachusetts. He completed his Ed.D. at Nova Southeastern University with a concentration in Literacy. Jim took full advantage of his close proximity to Boston and implemented his applied dissertation with the Boston Public School system. His applied dissertation emphasized the application of metacognition as it relates to reading strategies. Noftle’s leadership attempts to foster in teachers a new paradigm of instruction by focusing on strategies to facilitate optimal learning and the implementation of reflective practices. Throughout his applied dissertation, Noftle conducted workshops, collected data, analyzed teaching practices, and closely monitored the implementation of literacy instruction. As a result, Eastern Nazarene College developed a partnership with the Richard J. Murphy School in Boston.
