Dr. Ramón B. Barreras currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Special Education. He is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). Prior to coming to APU, Dr. Barreras served as a clinical researcher, bilingual school psychologist, behavior specialist, and special education teacher. He served as a Research Director on a federally funded grant evaluating the longitudinal effectiveness of empirically supported interventions for students with intense academic, social, emotional, and behavioral problems. He has conducted and overseen research projects within schools in the development of schoolwide Response to Intervention (RtI) approaches for students at-risk for academic failure and behavior problems. In addition, he has coordinated wrap-around services for students and their families.
Dr. Barreras has trained hundreds of teachers, school psychologists, counselors, behavior specialists, program specialists, and administrators in the areas of social/emotional assessment and intervention, positive behavior intervention planning and support, and applied behavior analysis. Dr. Barreras is a Behavior Intervention Case Manger (BICM) SELPA trainer. He has trained school teams in the development and maintenance of schoolwide positive behavior supports, classroom management and student discipline. His expertise includes: assessment and intervention with children and adolescents with Emotional Disturbance, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and ADHD; applied behavior analysis; functional analysis; social skills assessment and intervention; and response to intervention practice. Dr. Barreras consults with families and school districts in mediation and due process cases in the areas of social/emotional assessment, applied behavior analysis therapy, and Psychoeducational assessment.
Dr. Barreras’ primary research interests focus on the development and implementation of multi-tiered educational service delivery models based on response to intervention logic. In particular, he is interested in conducting this research with students with or at-risk for developing emotional and/or behavioral disorders. This area of research involves three interrelated strands of inquiry: (1) development and validation of progress monitoring tools for social behavior, (2) problem-solving, data-based decision making, and (3) transferring what we know works from scientific research to improve the social, emotional, and academic well being of students to real world educational settings (i.e., effectiveness research).
Dr. Barreras is currently examining the use of RtI procedures to identify students with emotionally disturbance or specific learning disability; collateral and combined effects of academic and behavioral interventions; minority disproportionality in special education, particularly, African American males as emotionally disturbed; and evidence-based individualized positive behavior support plans.
