Previous to my tenure at Azusa Pacific University, I taught for ten years in the School of Education at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. While there, I served as the Multiple Subject Coordinator and Single Subjects Coordinator. Prior to teaching at the university level, I taught for 19 years in the San Diego Unified School District. I was a classroom mentor teacher and a site administrator at both the elementary and the secondary levels while with SDUSD. Special Interests and Activities
I have worked in conjunction with the Ministry of Education in Belize to conduct summer teaching/leadership opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the isolated villages of Armenia and Gale’s Point. In both villages, the students are provided teaching and leadership opportunities in the village schools. Graduate students in the credential and Educational Leadership programs not only gain site level classroom and administrative experiences, but also help provide professional development training for local teachers. While serving in Armenia, the students teach in the village school and work closely with local missionaries and the villagers, helping them to identify and develop sustainable resources. While in the village of Armenia, the students and I also volunteer evenings and weekends in the King’s Children’s Home orphanage in the capital city of Belmopan. Additionally, in conjunction with local missionaries, I have worked over the past seven years to help create an Adult English Language Institute in Armenia that is now currently staffed and operated by the villagers. In the village of Gale’s Point, I have worked with local missionaries to establish an Adult Literacy Training Center. We are hoping that the Gale’s Point Adult Literacy Training Center will one day be fully staffed and operated by villagers, as well and continue to work toward that goal.
I have also worked closely with the AustraLearn Corporation and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to develop and implement student teaching opportunities for elementary and secondary teacher candidates in Queensland, Australia. Australia has long been recognized as the world leader in literacy development and instructional pedagogy. The experiences the teacher candidates receive there put them well above traditional credential candidates upon their return.
I am also a consultant to the CCTC as a reader for the approval of university program documents regarding the instruction of English Learners.
