The Department of Special Education offers the below graduate programs:

Authorizations

Added Authorization in Special Education: Autism

This add-on teaching authorization in special education allows candidates to earn an authorization in one of the following areas: autism spectrum disorders, emotional disturbance, or resource specialist. The authorization can be added to an existing special education mild-to-moderate teaching credential to expand the scope of instruction for current teachers.

Added Authorization in Special Education: Autism (online)

The Online Added Authorization in Special Education offers candidates who hold a Mild/Moderate Disabilities Credential the option of an add-on teaching authorization in autism spectrum disorders, emotional disturbance, or as a resource specialist.

Combined Programs

Digital Teaching and Learning, M.A.Ed., with Mild/Moderate Disabilities Specialist Credential, Track A

Designed for candidates without full-time teaching contracts, this program combines a master's degree in digital teaching and learning with a mild/moderate disabilities credential, equipping teachers to infuse technology into the curriculum of special needs classrooms.

Digital Teaching and Learning, M.A.Ed., with Mild/Moderate Disabilities Specialist Internship Credential, Track B

For those with full-time teaching contracts, this program combines a master's degree in digital teaching and learning with a mild/moderate disabilities credential, equipping teachers to infuse technology into the curriculum of special needs classrooms.

Digital Teaching and Learning, M.A.Ed., with Moderate/Severe Disabilities Specialist Credential, Track A

Designed for candidates without a full-time teaching contract, this program combines a master's degree in digital teaching and learning with a moderate/severe disabilities credential, equipping teachers to infuse technology into the curriculum of special needs classrooms.

Digital Teaching and Learning, M.A.Ed., with Moderate/Severe Disabilities Specialist Internship Credential, Track B

For candidates with a full-time teaching contract, this program combines a master's degree in digital teaching and learning with a moderate/severe disabilities credential, equipping teachers to infuse technology into the curriculum of special needs classrooms.

Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities Specialist Clear Credential (with or without a Master’s Degree)

Designed for full-time special education teachers who have their Preliminary Credential, this program allows students to earn both a Master of Arts in Education: Special Education and an Educational Specialist Clear Credential.

Special Education, M.A.Ed., with Mild to Moderate Disabilities Specialist Credential, Track A

For those without full-time teaching contracts, this master’s/credential program provides focused study of special needs classrooms and students under the tutelage of experienced professionals.

Special Education, M.A.Ed., with Mild to Moderate Disabilities Specialist Preliminary Internship Credential, Track B

For those with full-time teaching contracts, this master’s/credential program expands educators’ skill base and enhances teaching techniques in special needs classrooms.

Special Education, M.A.Ed., with Moderate to Severe Educational Specialist Preliminary Credential, Track A

For those without full-time teaching contracts, this master’s/credential program provides focused study of special needs classrooms and students under the tutelage of experienced professionals.

Special Education, M.A.Ed., with Moderate to Severe Educational Specialist Preliminary Credential, Track B

For those with full-time teaching contracts, this master’s/credential program expands educators’ skill base and enhances teaching techniques in special needs classrooms.

Credentials

Mild/Moderate Disabilities Specialist Credential, Track A

For noncontracted teachers, this special education credential program prepares educators to skillfully and compassionately guide mild to moderately disabled students.

Mild/Moderate Disabilities Specialist Internship Credential, Track B

For contracted teacher interns, this credential in special education imparts the specialized knowledge and skills necessary for teachers of mild to moderately disabled students.

Moderate/Severe Educational Specialist Credential, Track A

APU's Moderate to Severe Disabilities (K–12) Specialist (Preliminary) Credential, Track A suits candidates without full-time teaching contracts. Candidates must see an advisor for proper placement in tracks with this credential program.

Moderate/Severe Educational Specialist Internship Credential, Track B

APU's Moderate to Severe Disabilities (K–12) Specialist (Preliminary) Credential, Track B suits candidates with current full-time teaching contracts. Candidates must see an advisor for proper placement in tracks with this credential program.

Master’s Degrees

Special Education and Educational Technology, M.Ed.

The Master of Education: Special Education and Educational Technology (noncredential) program focuses on research-proven instructional strategies and the integration of technology into the curriculum for special needs populations.

Special Education, M.A.Ed.

Offering the master’s in special education without the credential, this program provides the training and experiences that lead to confident, competent, and compassionate care of persons with disabilities.

Special Education, M.A.Ed. (online)

The Online Master of Arts in Education: Special Education (non-credential) is designed for individuals eager to pursue a Master of Arts with emphases in classroom interventions, bilingual special education strategies, emotional disturbance (behavior analysis), autisum spectrum disorders, or resource specialist. This program does not lead to a California teaching credential.
