APU’s Online Moderate/Severe Disabilities Education Specialist (K–12) Preliminary Credential, Non-Intern suits candidates without full-time teaching contracts. Candidates can choose to earn their credential on campus or online.

The current shortage of special education teachers creates a growing demand for educators with this credential. This program prepares teacher candidates for 21st-century teaching and learning. As APU candidates prepare to work in schools, they must know and demonstrate the content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to help all students learn. Therefore, the School of Education assesses candidates from admission through recommendation of credentials in these credential standards. As a result, APU candidates are highly sought after because they fulfill these professional standards.

APU also offers an Online Moderate/Severe Disabilities Education Specialist (K–12) Preliminary Credential, Intern program for candidates with current full-time teaching contracts. Candidates must see an advisor for proper placement in tracks within this credential program.
