Socially sustainable study abroad aims to connect student guests/programs and host individuals/communities in ways that narrow the gap between people from different cultures and strengthen the bond of understanding and respect between strangers. Every participant is potentially a bridge between peoples, enabling a two-way learning process that can be deeply rewarding for host and guest alike. Cultural appreciation opens the door to forging cross-cultural bonds and alliances based on a common commitment to community betterment.
Part of our commitment to social sustainability involves selecting programs that encourage students to form mutually beneficial cross-cultural relationships, whether with local families, national students and instructors, or staff within community organizations. These programs equip students to learn local cultural patterns and to communicate in and outside the classroom in the local language.
