Environmental Sustainability

Study abroad that is environmentally sustainable strives to minimize the negative impacts of travel on the ecosphere. This is a fairly recent development—a response to climate change and other signs of planetary stress. Previously, the natural world was largely seen as trivial to the intercultural experience. We now recognize, however, that the causes of our environmental crisis, as well as the solutions, do not exist independent of human behavior; instead they are fixed in human behavior. And at the root of human behavior is a certain relationship between humans and the earth.

The force of this fact is causing more and more of us to rethink the ecological consequences of our travel behavior. Students participating in GLT will learn more about the impact of travel on the environment and steps to help minimize their carbon footprint. In fact, one of the most “inconvenient truths” for global learners is that international travel is closely linked with climate change.
