Steve Mays is the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel South Bay in Gardena, California. He has been serving the Greater Los Angeles area in ministry since 1970. Taken quite literally from the gutter by the miraculous workings of the Lord, and involved in a powerful discipleship training program by Pastor Chuck Smith (founder of the Calvary Chapel movement), Steve developed a passion for the lost, and an unwavering devotion to sharing the Word of God.
Within a few years of his conversion, Steve worked in the House Ministries of Calvary Chapel, helping individuals to get off the streets, off drugs, and into God’s Word. In 1975, he started a Calvary Chapel in the City of Cypress and remained there until 1980, when he became the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel South Bay. From humble beginnings, Calvary Chapel South Bay today is home to more than 9,000 regular attendees weekly.
Steve is a well-known conference speaker, author, and radio personality through his “Light of the Word” broadcast heard on more than 60 radio stations throughout the country. With the growth of the Internet, he now has listeners in more than 50 countries. He has spoken at The Gideons International convention in Nigeria, participated in Oxford University’s Round Table in London, England, and conducted Bible studies at the Pentagon and a few times in the White House, where he met former President George W. Bush.
Steve is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University, holds a master’s degree in theology, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in recognition of his ministry at CCSB. He also received the Cornelius P. Haggard Outstanding Alumnus Award at the APU School of Theology’s 25th anniversary celebration.
But above all his publications and speaking engagements, he is most amazed by the greater gifts God has given him: his wife of more than 40 years, Gail; his son, Nathan, and daughter, Heather; a grandson, Anthony; and three granddaughters, Riley, Kennedy, and Hadley.
