Pentecost: Learning the Languages of Peace

In “Pentecost: Learning the Languages of Peace,” Hauerwas discusses the failure of the category “universal” to provide insight into the way the gospel comes to life and gathers a church of specific men, women and children. This particular church is shown to have a “catholicity” that is entangled in particular times, places and bodies. It is shown to speak the language of flesh and blood lives that have been formed by the particular story of Israel and Jesus, which they have received as a gift-a story of grace, love, hospitality, martyrdom, humility, and peace at once to be spoken, heard and practiced with longsuffering.

America’s God

In the evening Robertson holiness lecture, Hauerwas sounds a clarion call for the church in America to come out from the dominant culture to be a particular people following a particular God. This lecture entitled “America’s God” examines the distinctive character of American Christianity. In his hopeful address, Hauerwas explores the “Protestant” character of American Roman Catholics, the challenges faced by American Protestantism to resist the peculiarly American version of “the world,” and why Protestantism in America is dying. Finally, Hauerwas unveils the gospel’s invitation to imagine the possibility of life even in the face of violence and death. It is his hope that “God may yet make the church faithful even in America.”
