Health Insurance Information

Health insurance is available to all APU students. What follows is basic information for undergraduate and graduate students, including services the insurance provides.

Our student accident and health insurance plan is provided by:

Blue Cross PPO
(800) 888-2108
www.bluecrossca.com

Insurance cards will be issued and should be carried on each person.

Undergraduate Students

Health insurance is:
  • Mandatory for students with seven or more units and on-campus residents.
  • Mandatory for international students on APU I-20s or IAP-66s.
  • Optional for students with six or fewer units.

Graduate Students

Health insurance is:
  • Mandatory for on-campus residents who are not covered by another policy.
  • Mandatory for international students on APU I-20s or IAP-66s.
  • Optional for all other graduate students and must be selected at time of registration.

All graduate students must carry at least five units per semester to be eligible for insurance.

Dependents

Any insured student may also insure his/her dependents. For more information regarding dependents insurance, contact Tickie Moline at (626) 815-2100.

Athletes

All students involved in NAIA intercollegiate sports are automatically enrolled in an additional insurance policy for athletes. For more information, contact the Athletic Department at (626) 815-5081.

Cost

Health insurance costs $225 per semester for both undergraduate and graduate and appears under "Health Fee" on a student's account and bill. The health free will automatically be added to the account of students for whom insurance is mandatory. Graduate students that choose insurance coverage must do so at the time of registration. For verification, students can check their accounts for a "health fee" posting by logging into their Cougars' Den accounts.

Coverage

If the student is already insured (e.g., under their parents’ policy), then the school insurance is a secondary insurance. If they have no other insurance, Blue Cross will then be the primary insurance.

Blue Cross pays at 80/20. In other words, Blue Cross covers 80% of costs and the patient is responsible for the remaining 20%. The benefit year maximum is $50,000/illness or injury per year.

Elective or preventative dental services or eye glasses are not covered.

It is beneficial to see a Blue Cross provider when going to a doctor outside the Student Health Center to reduce the cost of the visit. A referral from the Student Health Center is necessary in order for the $100 annual deductible to be waived.

In the case of an emergency, call 911 (811 from on-campus phone) first, and then the Department of Campus Safety at (626) 815-3898. Once able, let the Student Health Center know about the emergency and where treatment was given so the $100 annual deductible can be waived.

Brochures are available at the Student Health Center for further information.
