Getting There/Transportation

Air Travel in Europe

For reasonably, sometimes downright cheap airfares within Europe, try:

Please note that Ryan Air’s “Frankfurt-Hahn” Airport is not really even near the city of Frankfurt. But there are buses that will get you to this airport from Heidelberg (see website). A closer Ryan Air airport is “Karlsruhe-Baden,” albeit with fewer destination possibilities than Frankfurt-Hahn. Book ahead for the best rates.

Train Travel

Germany boasts an extensive and efficient rail system with reasonably priced fares, especially when booking ahead. But even when traveling spontaneously, great bargains can be had, especially on weekends with certain trains (ask about the Wochenendticket.) For more information, see www.bahn.de or stop by the counter at the Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station). Booking tickets is easiest in person at the counter. You won’t have trouble finding someone to help you in English.
