About the Program
The High Sierra Program offers students the unique opportunity to step away from the typical college experience. Each semester 40 to 50 students embark on the adventure of a lifetime as they enter into a small community that is unique to this program. The tight knit community coupled with faculty and staff who are dedicated to the spiritual and academic growth of each student prove to make this program an incredible semester for every student.
Our program takes place in the High Sierras at Emerald Cove Camp, located on Bass Lake in the Sierra National Forest, just south of Yosemite National Park. It is in the midst of the beauty, order, and mystery of God's creation that students live and study. This beautiful mountain setting provides the opportunity for a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities including: kayaking, rock climbing, wakeboarding, backpacking and tons more. In addition this setting is particularly conducive to concentrated, undistracted study, reflection, writing, conversation, and prayer.
Additionally, the High Sierra program holds each student to high academic standards. Classes are taught as part of Azusa Pacific University’s Great Works Option, which allows students to meet a substantial portion of their General Studies Requirements as well as Upper Division Electives. The Great Works Option is extremely unique in that students learn through the integration of all their classes and the reading of the Great Works which reflect the human intellect and imagination. The benefits of studying in this manner are twofold: first the study and discussion of such works offer a potent introduction to liberal education for the most intrepid students, those with high personal motivation to explore life's great questions by engaging in a conversation across the centuries with the preeminent minds. Second, the integration of the studies makes the whole much greater than the sum of the individual parts.
The High Sierra program offers students an opportunity to slow down and step away from the busyness of an urban lifestyle. Our students experience growth as a whole person as they are encouraged and guided by the caring and dedicated faculty and staff of the High Sierra Program. The program boasts of sending back to Azusa Pacific University campus leaders and dedicated students who truly shape the student body.
