Description
The Senior Director of Development, for Major and Planned Gifts, is responsible for all aspects of a comprehensive major and planned gifts program from prospect assignment through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. This individual will supervise the development officers and support staff for major and planned gifts.
Examples of Duties
- Reports to and works with the Executive Director to establish a plan, including specific goals and timetables, to raise major gifts and planned gifts required within the scope of special projects, campaigns, endowment or ongoing fund-raising needs.
- Supervise all major and planned giving staff.
- Identify and implement specific strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major and planned gift donor prospects; review written presentations and materials; work with the Executive Director and staff to assure effective coordination of cultivation activity.
- Oversee orientation and information sessions on planned giving for the development staff and appropriate internal and external volunteers.
- Responsible for raising major current and planned gifts to the university. Carry a portfolio of major and planned gift prospects and donors. Engage in cultivation/solicitation activities to assure achievement of fundraising goals.
- Provide information for prospect records through appropriate documentation in the form of contact reports and strategy statements to be housed in the central Raiser’s Edge system.
- In cooperation with University Relations, develop a marketing plan and maintain an ongoing communications program to promote major and planned gifts.
- Responsible for a recognition program acknowledging major and planned gift donors designed to encourage their continued participation in major gift fundraising efforts.
- Provide timely and accurate reports of major gift activity and results to the Executive Director.
- Serve as liaison with legal and financial experts as needed.
- Work with the Executive Director to refine administration policies and procedures regarding gifting, for review and approval by appropriate board committees. Oversee the implementation of such policies and procedures.
- Monitor systems to ensure proper customer service of the university’s existing income beneficiaries of planned gifts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Baccalaureate degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
Five years experience in fundraising preferably within a higher education or comparably complex non-profit environment.
Skills
Proven success with major and planned gifts solicitations. Thorough knowledge of development principles and a track record of success in managing major and planned gifts programs. Knowledge of planned giving instruments, and relevant regulations and laws pertaining to planned gifts. Experience with supervision of subordinate staff members. A level of professional maturity, judgment and decisiveness to motivate fellow staff and volunteers, and to inspire confidence among donor prospects and the estate professionals. Strong affinity with and commitment to the Christian mission of Azusa Pacific University. Excellent organization, written and verbal communications skills. Strong interpersonal skills.

Full-time, 12-month position. Salary to be determined based upon qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
