Assistant Campus Pastor: Multiethnic and Gender Specific Spiritual Formation

Description
The Assistant Campus Pastor serves as a part-time pastoral shepherd and counselor for 15 hours per week. This is done in partnership with Campus Pastors to provide timely support and guidance for the undergraduate community desiring or needing spiritual formation. A high percentage of this time will be spent in already scheduled appointments with students who request a pastor, or have been recommend to one for prayer, theological questions, celebration, crises, sanctions, and many other reasons. Other time will be spent participating in larger spiritual formation initiatives. Position will meet requirements for Field Education in graduate theology programs, and has some flexibility to personalize training experience.
Examples of Duties
- When here on campus be available for pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance to primarily ethnically diverse and female undergraduate students.
- Work with a spirit that is ready to listen and care for a wide range of students and scenarios.
- Collaborate with Residents Life, University Counseling Center, Health Center, Multi-Ethnic Programs, Student Success, and any other offices that might help create better care for students.
- Intentionally collaborate with APU’s Diversity office and Multi-Ethnic Programs office to be about the work of racial reconciliation on campus from a Biblical and theological perspective.
- Report in supervision, by phone, and via email regularly to the Associate Campus Pastor for Community Care according to protocol.
- Maintain interaction with students by appointments, and sustain a “presence” on campus when they are not in appointments by moving outside the office to look for casual opportunities to care.
- Collaborate and help lead with faculty, staff, and administrators on any large scale crisis.
- Communicate consistently with the Administrative Assistant for the Campus Pastors Office concerning schedule and follow up for students.
- Attend bi-weekly Campus Pastoral Staff meetings and monthly Student Life in-service trainings.
- Participate occasionally in chapel services and other campus events as requested by Campus Pastors.
- Participate in various student life committees as requested by Campus Pastors.
- Perform other responsibilities related to job description as assigned by supervisor.
Education
B. A. required. At least one year of M.A. in Theology/Ministry or Mdiv. work completed. Coursework in pastoral counseling, and gender and ethnic diversity issues preferred.
Experience
Three - Five years of experience as a professional specifically in the area of pastoral ministry, with at least some experience in pastoral care and counseling. Youth or college-age ministry experience preferred.
Skills
Leadership, initiative, and administrative ability. Ability to balance a variety of tasks and demands. Excellent organizational, managerial, problem solving, oral and written communication skills. Ability to use the computer with Windows and Microsoft products to complete tasks. Self-awareness and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of procedures and theory in the field of spiritual care and pastoral counseling, Biblical interpretation, and Christian theology. Ability to encourage a range of spiritual and intellectual styles and develop leaders to minister to undergraduate students. Passion for students, vision and commitment to help intentionally develop the campus spiritual climate of the campus. Ability to intimately understand and work cooperatively with all undergraduate students, faculty, staff, administrators, board members, and parents of students. Ability and desire to reach out to all students, especially those who are disenfranchised (a typical “fringe” student). Possess a strong cross cultural competence with the ability to pastor culturally diverse students. Ability to learn procedures, retain information, and present one’s self in a professional manner that reflects the goals and mission of APU.
