Description

The PS DBA is responsible for implementing, upgrading, managing and maintaining the PeopleSoft applications, data and related technologies, such as HCM, Financials, Student Administration, CRM, and Portal environments.
The PS DBA must work individually, with other DBAs, and with the developers in an effective manner. The PS DBA works with project and production support teams to plan and implement application and infrastructure requirements. The PS DBA helps build application environments in conjunction Network Services and participates with ongoing capacity planning activities.
The PS DBA maintains all environments in support of development, testing, staging, and production. The PS DBA must install and setup PeopleSoft and related software in conformity with APU standards in order to fit into the chosen application architecture and perform environment operational testing.

Examples of Duties

  • Configures and maintains the PS environments: development, testing, staging, and production.
  • Patches regularly in order to keep current with releases.
  • Builds application environments in conjunction Network Services.
  • Performs benchmarks and tuning
  • Helps estimate future capacity requirements,
  • Writes SQL scripts and batch scripts to help automate routine tasks
  • Assists in migrating PS code from development through to production
  • Assists with refreshing of data from production to dev, testing, and staging environments
  • Monitors components such as the Oracle Application Server, process scheduler, and reporting engines
  • Monitors data base capacities and performance
  • Monitors and verifies the backups of the databases
  • Restores or migrates databases per schedules and according to service level agreements
  • Assists in managing and administering PeopleSoft Security
  • Analyzes and resolves data base problems and or relationships between PeopleSoft technology components
  • Acts as top tier support for critically escalated PeopleSoft issues

Education

A degree in computer science or a related computer discipline preferred.

Experience

Four years practical experience administering PeopleSoft ERP systems preferred. Must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in:
a. PeopleSoft system upgrades, patching, & installations
b. PeopleSoft system administration
c. production environment support & troubleshooting

Practical experience administering recent versions of Oracle. Experience with SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL a plus. Must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in:
a. database tuning and performance optimization
b. SQL/index application tuning
c. back up and recovery
d. database development and normalization
e. job/task scheduling & scripting
f. production environment support & troubleshooting

Four years practical experience working on Linux, UNIX or Windows platforms. Basic O/S system administration knowledge is required, with a sufficient level of proficiency in file system operations, shell scripting, security, etc.

Skills

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
• The PS DBA must communicate appropriately with IMT’s customers and external suppliers.
• The PS DBA must work closely with other IMT staff to assist them with project management, budgets and strategic plans.
• The PS DBA must work with team members in a co-operative and trusting manner.
• This person must also be able to communicate complex technical details in a clear and concise manner to both technical and non-technical staff. These details may take the form of written and oral communications.

PROBLEM SOLVING and INITIATIVE

• The PS DBA must collaborate with IMT customers, IMT staff and external customers on a regular basis to solve problems. The ability to absorb a large amount of information, quickly evaluate the nature of the problem and to provide a solution rapidly and decisively is essential.
• The problems encountered vary greatly and may require the ability to work as part of a team to find a resolution. Solutions may involve the arranging of tasks to be done or conducting negotiations with IMT’s customers until satisfaction is provided.

LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE

This person must have a high level of independence, show a high level of initiative, have the ability to make decisions and be highly motivated. This must be done in a manner which is consistent with the team management structure that is employed by IMT.

INFLUENCE OF RESULTS

This person must recognise that many of the systems developed and maintained by IMT are mission critical to the university. The proper management of the computer environment and technical resources will mean that IMT can provide efficient and productive IT systems and solutions to the organisation, resulting in greater productivity by university staff. This requires the person to be well organised and have an extremely high work ethic.

Physical Demands

Repetitive hand motions at computer key board. Sitting and/or standing 5-6 hours per day. Listening and speaking on the telephone. Ability to conduct business at other offices on campus. Able to reach, grasp, pull, bend, lift up to 40 lbs. occasionally.

OTHER REMARKS:

• This position requires someone who is totally committed to excellence in customer service, and has a good understanding of APU’s overall business, business structures and business practices.
• This position requires acceptance of APU’s Christian ethos as encapsulated in the Cornerstones. This person will be required to support and uphold the IMT Charter. • To enable the university’s critical systems to operate normally at all times, this person is required to be available by telephone for management, consultation and liaison with support, development and technical staff after normal working hours and on weekends. This may require considerable onsite presence to manage emergency situations.
