SPAM Emails
February 12, 2008

Inappropriate or offensive SPAM is an unfortunate reality of email and Internet usage. In fact, it is even possible for you to receive offensive SPAM from familiar addresses, including ones that resemble an APU account and utilize common surnames. Spammers often use sophisticated spoof/virus-created emails that automatically generate random addresses. APU regrets these types of occurrences, but unfortunately, little recourse exists to curtail the activities of thousands of spammers across the globe.

Information and Media Technology (IMT) would like to assure you, however, that the chances of an inappropriate email being sent intentionally from an actual APU constituent are very slim. The university has specific email usage guidelines to which all students, faculty, and staff must adhere. In addition to the ability to monitor email communications for compliance with these policies, IMT uses the Symantec Brightmail Anti-Spam software to help limit the amount of SPAM circulating through the APU system.

To help reduce SPAM in your email, IMT recommends you use SPAM filtering software, which most email programs already provide. Should you still receive an offensive or inappropriate SPAM email, do not open it in case it contains a virus. Simply delete it from your Inbox or Junk folder. Any kind of reply only confirms to a spammer that your account is active, which may prompt more unsolicited messages.

If you have any further questions or concerns about this matter, please contact the IMT Support Desk at Ext. 5050 or support@apu.edu.
