Welcome, Mr. President
(continued)

Jon Wallace poses for a picture outside of Munson Chapel.

"I've watched this university grow from a small Bible college to a comprehensive university. Our success must be attributed to the tireless work of our faculty, staff, and administration, not only for dreaming the impossible into life, but, most important, for never sacrificing our commitment to God First in the process," said Wallace.

John F. Kennedy once remarked, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to one another." So, too, is both formal and informal means of education. Wallace has done much of both. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Azusa Pacific University and doctorate in business administration from United States International University, San Diego. He also studied at Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management, Boston. Then in 1993, Wallace arranged a two-year sabbatical from APU to serve as pastor of adult ministries, small groups, and strategic planning at Willow Creek Community Church, Barrington, Illinois. He led the strategic planning process for this 16,000-member church, with a staff of 200 and an annual budget of $13 million. Under his guidance, the small group ministry model tripled participation to 10,000.

Wallace's family is proud of his accomplishments. Wallace's wife, Gail, is an adjunct instructor in APU's Human Development Program and part-time RN in the Student Health Center. They have three children: David, Matt, and Kate.

When an institution of higher education installs a new president the process culminates in an inauguration that draws college presidents and academicians from across the United States as well as government officials, business executives, and church leaders. This celebration enables the new president to publicly articulate his vision for the first time since assuming the mantle of leadership and embarking on months of thoughtful discussions with campus constituents. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Given Wallace's deep connection to APU, the inaugural festivities will extend beyond the campus and encompass a series of presidential receptions slated for summer 2001. These receptions will allow Wallace to connect with new students, parents, churches, donors, and alumni who wish to share in this exciting university milestone. Details will follow by mail and online. The full account of the inauguration will appear in the summer edition of APU Life.
