Intensive English Programs

The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) offers a certificate program with six levels of study (basic through advanced English) taught in 15 week semesters. These semesters operate year-round, offer approximately 20 hours of class time per week, and include the courses listed in the ALCI Program Chart shown below.
ALCI Programs
Basic level — one to two semesters (dependent upon completion of basic skills)
- Levels 1 and 2
Academic Composition and Reading Skills, Oral Communication, Life Skills, Tutoring Lab, Mentoring, and International Chapel
Intermediate Levels
- Level 3 — one semester
Academic Composition and Reading Skills, Oral Communication, Intercultural Skills, International Perspectives on Current Events, Academic Study Skills, Mentoring, and International Chapel - Level 4 — one semester
Academic Composition and Reading Skills, Oral Communication, Presentation Skills, Intercultural Skills, Research Skills, Capstone Project, Mentoring, and International Chapel
Advanced Levels
- Level 5 — one semester
Grammar/ Seminar Speaking, Academic Research Project, Presentation Skills, Graduate Study Skills, Mentoring, International Chapel, and an audit of one undergraduate or graduate class. - Level 6 — one semester
Grammar/Seminar Speaking, Presentation Skills, Personal Leadership Development and/or World View Discussion, Mentoring, and two graduate classes for university credit
Certificates will be issued after successful completion of each level.
When you arrive at ALCI you will participate in one full day of testing in the areas of reading, listening comprehension, academic essay writing, and speaking.
You will also have a personal interview with an ALCI advisor. This will help us place you in the suitable learning level based on the results of your test evaluation.
ALCI also offers personal tutoring for students with special needs and for those who have already entered their university program but need help in undergraduate or graduate studies. As a student at ALCI you have the benefit of studying in a small personal class setting with the resources of a full university available for your use.
