Speaker
Justo González, Ph.D.
Perhaps best known for his three-volume History of Christian Thought and two-volume The Story of Christianity, Justo González, Ph.D., has had considerable influence on a generation of pastors who have used his textbooks in seminary courses on historical theology. González’s wide-ranging knowledge of church history is accompanied by both a gift for explaining how historical factors influenced theological moves and a penetrating analysis of theological trends and motifs.
González attended United Seminary in Cuba, received his M.A. at Yale, and was the youngest person to be awarded a Ph.D. in Historical Theology at Yale at age 23. After teaching at the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, Candler School of Theology, and several other institutions, he now devotes his time to research and writing and to promoting Latino theological education.
His writings include more than 100 books, and have been translated to 10 languages. His work on behalf of Latino theological education has been instrumental in the founding of the Hispanic Summer Program (HSP), the Hispanic Theological Initiative (HTI), and the Association for Hispanic Theological Education (AETH). A retired United Methodist minister, González is married to Catherine Gunsalus González, professor emerita of church history at Columbia Theological Seminary. They live in Georgia, where their daughter, two granddaughters, and two great-grandchildren also reside.
