Frequently Asked Questions

What is AskNow?
AskNow is a service that combines the speed and convenience of the Internet with the information savvy of reference librarians. This means you can go to APU's library website, type your question, "talk" to a librarian and get an answer while you wait–virtually the same as if you were at one of APU's three library reference desks.

How does it work?
Simply log on to APU's AskNow from any computer on or off campus with Internet access. When you type your question, an academic reference librarian will respond by typing an answer and/or by co-browsing with you to an answer.

What kinds of questions can AskNow answer?
AskNow is designed to answer brief, factual questions for college assignments and to get you going in the right direction for research. A few examples: "Does APU have a particular article in full text." "What scholarly resources are available from APU libraries for my class assignment on teen pregnancy?" If your question requires in-depth research, the librarian may suggest database sources, books, or e-books to get you started. The librarian may also refer you to a subject expert. We also encourage you to call or visit one of the three APU library reference desks. The phone numbers for each are (626) 815-6000, Ext. 3270 for Marshburn, Ext. 5066 for Darling, or Ext. 5684 for Stamps.

AskNow is not intended for questions about your personal account. For these questions contact the IMT Support Desk at or (626) 815-5050. To protect your privacy and the security of all patron records, online librarians do not have access to your personal information. You can also choose to be anonymous when you ask a question. After your session, you can click on a Web link to recall your transcript and then, if you like, forward that transcript to an email address.

Who can use AskNow?
APU's AskNow is open to all APU/University College students, staff and faculty.

When is it open?
AskNow is open for business every day of the year, 24 hours a day.

How long will it take?
Most questions can be answered within 10-20 minutes. The librarian may simply give you the answer or show you how to find the answer for future use.

How much does it cost?
There is no charge.

How will the library deal with privacy concerns?
AskNow follows standard library policy, which considers all transactions confidential.

How can the library afford to offer this type of service?
New technology makes it possible to share resources and to provide more service to online users. Though no single library can staff all hours during the week, APU's reference librarians take turns with other academic reference librarians throughout the U.S. to be online. APU librarians staff AskNow on Wednesdays between 3 and 5 p.m. but you're more likely to get another reference librarian somewhere else in the U.S.
