Off The Press
Excerpt: A Peaceable Psychology: Christian Therapy in a World of Many Cultures (Brazos Press, 2009) by Alvin Dueck and Kevin Reimer, Ph.D.
"If a peaceable psychology is tradition-sensitive, then the foundation that will shape the Christian mental-health worker is the person of Jesus Christ. No other foundations are adequate. There are no universal, absolute truths that can substitute for the truth of Jesus's life in shaping our imagination, our convictions and our actions. The church is an emerging sign of God's reign is where, through its practices, our character as therapists is shaped. It is where we discern what it means to be followers of Jesus. There is no manual available for Christian models of therapy, whether when working with a suicidal client, a borderline personality disorder, or a grieving parent. However, we are convinced that the narrative of the gospel of our Lord heals now, as it did then."
Quotes
"I realized that my primary vocation, in a nutshell, has to do with the fact that I’m called to Christian scholarship. For me, being a research scholar is about being faithful to God’s call to use the mind to further the kingdom. At some point in my journey I realized that I wanted to show how a life of faith is relevant to a life of mind, and that, for me, has been a source of professional joy." - Kevin S. Reimer
"Kevin Reimer is doing innovative research in moral psychology that integrates the perspectives of diverse models and disciplines to help create new paradigms in the field. His particular interest in merging psychological and religious frameworks has the potential to unite the worldviews that have hitherto been like oil and water. Kevin is one of the bright stars in the cohort of the scholars that is bringing new life to the field." - Larry Walker, professor, Department of Psychology, University of British Columbia
