WHAT:

This concert kicks off with a historic event as APU's Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Christopher Russell, performs a 1928 symphony by Danish composer Rued Langgaard, marking the first time a complete Langgaard piece is performed in the U.S. The concert also includes Shostakovich's monumental 10th Symphony, and APU professor Robert Sage, DMA, performs a piano solo in one of the charming keyboard concertos of Haydn. Admission is free.

“I first discovered the music of Rued Langgaard a few years ago when I took a chance and bought a CD of his music,” said Russell. “I was very impressed by this music for its power and originality. One of the pieces on that disc was the first version of the 5th Symphony from 1926. That was the piece that made the biggest impression on me and the one I hoped to conduct first. I am thrilled to be able to program this piece with the amazing Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra. I spoke with them about the piece and Langgaard before we began rehearsing it to give them more of an understanding of the music. From the first moment, they embraced this new work. They play it with an energy and passion as if they have known this piece all of their lives.”

Program:

Rued Langgaard | Symphony No. 5 (1st version—1928): United States premiere
