Azusa Pacific University, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and the Perryman Foundation host the 32st annual History Day L.A. More than 700 L.A. County 4th—12th graders are expected to participate. The public is invited to attend this free event.
Local schools participating in History Day L.A. include Stanton Elementary in Glendora; Sierra Madre Elementary and Sierra Madre Middle School in Pasadena; Ganesha High School, Pomona High School, and Fremont Academy in Pomona; Huntington Middle School in San Marino; and Edgewood Middle School in West Covina.
History Day L.A. is part of a national program that gives students an opportunity to explore history through creative and original productions on specific historical themes. This year’s projects focus on the theme, Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, and Consequences. Students’ projects, which include presentations and performances, are judged by community members and social science professionals.
Winners in the elementary, junior, and senior categories go on to compete at California History Day, and state winners in junior and senior categories then travel to the University of Maryland in June to participate in National History Day.
Throughout the day, historical re-enactments will take place on the West Campus lawn to give students a tangible representation of the events studied in textbooks. Historical organizations participating include: the New Buffalo soldiers, Heritage Trail Hands on History, George Washington and Volunteers, Riley of Los Rios, Yucaipa Valley Forge and Adobe Brick Making, Ben Franklin’s Printing Press, and North and South Civil War.
Local museums will also be on site to share resources available for teachers and students including, Wells Fargo Historical Education, Chinese Historical Society, Autry National Center for the West, along with local historical societies from Azusa, Glendora, Covina, and Arcadia.
