WHAT:

Azusa Pacific University and Fellowship of Christian Athletes invite Southern California teenagers, as well as their pastors, coaches, teachers, parents, and friends to campus for a dynamic evening with Oakland Raiders' quarterback Derek Carr.

Since 1984, the annual Night of Champions outreach event has sought to reach youth for Christ, bringing the gospel message to junior high and high school students through well-known athletes, entertainers, and musicians who also have a public relationship with Jesus Christ.

WHO In celebration of its 33rd anniversary, this year’s Night of Champions is centered on the theme "Faith Over Fear," found in Luke 8:22-24 with featured speaker Carr.

Before being drafted in the second round to the Oakland Raiders, Carr had a spectacular college career. A two-time All-American selection as a junior and senior and a two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. He became the third player in league history to win the award in back-to-back seasons and is one of only two players in Fresno State history to be named a conference offensive player of the year in back-to-back seasons. He established 27 new school records and 21 Mountain West records in his career at Fresno State.

This past season, while playing for the Raiders in a game against the Colts, Carr broke his fibula, ending his season early. After his injury, Carr displayed his faith in a post on Twitter: "Thank you to everyone that has been praying for me! Things happen in life that we don't always understand, but I do KNOW this: I serve a God that loves me and that is the ultimate healer!"

Carr was born in Fresno, California, the youngest of three children, to Rodger and Sheryl Carr. He met his wife, Heather, while attending Fresno State University and the two were married in 2012. They now have a son. He attributes his faith in God to his football success, saying “I am grateful for the opportunity to further His kingdom by sharing my faith on and off the football field. At any moment, any second, my football career could be taken away, but my faith and relationship with God will never be taken from me.”
