AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific University was one of six universities from the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities awarded a $50,000 grant from Oklahoma City’s Butterfield Memorial Foundation. This grant provides scholarships for current junior and senior nursing majors. The scholarships are to be distributed across the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years, in order to continue the foundation’s legacy of training Christian nurses.
The foundation awarded a total of $300,000 in grants to the six Christian universities. Besides Azusa Pacific, grants were also awarded to MidAmerica Nazarene University, Olathe, Kan.; Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Bartlesville, Okla.; Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Wash.; Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, Okla.; and Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, N.Y.
The Butterfield Memorial Foundation was created in 2005, despite the sale of Deaconess Hospital, in Oklahoma. Before its sale, the Deaconess Hospital was an advocate for health needs of the underserved in the communities. Currently, the mission is being fulfilled through an emphasis on direct access to free medical care as it is provided by Christian not-for-profits. The foundation focuses on training Christian nurses as a contributor to community health.
