Azusa, Calif. — Azusa Pacific University’s Symphony Orchestra, directed by Christopher Russell, performs Debussy, Barber, Ravel, and Hillborg in a one of a kind concert that includes a U.S. premiere and a special guest appearance by one of the nation’s top violinists, Charles Stegeman.

  • When: Thurs., March 31, 7:30 p.m.

    Pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m.

  • Where: Pomona First Baptist Church,

586 N. Main St., Pomona, Calif.

  • Admission is free.

The program begins and ends with two of the most popular and beloved French orchestral works of all time: Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Maurice Ravel’s Bolero.

In addition, the Symphony Orchestra will perform the United States premiere of a short, but brilliant piece by Andres Hillborg. “One thing I like to do with the orchestra is play a lot of new music and introduce them to a broad variety of music from all different eras,” said Russell. “So we are doing a brand new piece from Sweden, which is called Four Transitory Worlds by the Swedish composer Andres Hillborg, one of the top modern composers around today.”

Appearing alongside the Symphony Orchestra is visiting scholar Charles Stegeman, concertmaster for the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, and concertmaster and chamber music performer with the Music Academy of The West. “Mr. Stegeman is one of the top violinists and violin teachers in the country, and we are very fortunate to have him here on faculty,” said Russell.

Program:

Claude Debussy | Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun

Samuel Barber | Violin Concerto

Anders Hillborg | Four Transitory Worlds (U.S. Premiere)
