Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla ’82 will deliver the undergraduate commencement address. The university will present Bonilla with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the ceremony in recognition of her dedication to public service. Elected to the California State Assembly in November 2010, she is the first woman to represent California’s 14th Assembly District. Bonilla currently serves as chair of the Business, Professions, and Consumer Protection Committee, and the Select Committee on Increasing the Integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in California K–14 Schools, as well as an acting member of the Health Committee and the Utilities and Commerce Committee. As a state legislator, Bonilla led advocacy efforts to minimize cuts to the Cal Grant Program, which makes attending college a reality for many California students, including 18 percent of APU students. Prior to her time in the Assembly, she taught at the high school level and received her bachelor’s degree in English from APU.
Robert Welsh, Ph.D., dean and professor of the School of Behavioral and Applied Sciences at APU, will speak at the graduate commencement. Welsh previously worked as a psychologist for California’s Patton State Hospital. He writes and conducts research in forensic psychology, couple and family psychology, and the integration of psychology and Christianity. During the graduate ceremony, Azusa Pacific will present an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to Reverend Jimmy Tsai, pastor, teacher, author, and Free Methodist Church administrator who also works in the field of Christian education.
