Through Their Eyes Features Global Art by Azusa’s Youth

February 1, 2007

AZUSA, Calif. –

Azusa Pacific University’s Office of Ministry and Service and the Associated Student Body host Through Their Eyes, a global art show featuring work by Azusa youth. The exhibit showcases artwork created by youth involved in APU service programs including Peach Factory, Cerritos Kidz, and Students for Environmental Education and Discovery (S.E.E.D.).

Nearly 150 elementary school students contributed to the show, with work ranging from paintings and drawings, to posters and shape art. The S.E.E.D. participants sought to portray endangered species of the world and rainforests in their art and painted flowerpots. Peach Factory and Cerritos Kidz students glued beans on cardboard to map out different countries, as well as creating their own piñatas.

An opening night celebration takes place Mon., Feb. 5, from 6-8 p.m. in Wilden Hall, located on APU’s East Campus at 901 E. Alosta Ave., Azusa. The exhibit is open Feb. 5-16, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Peach Factory is an after-school ministry with children from the Lee Elementary School area. APU student volunteers interact with the children through arts, crafts, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Through Cerritos Kidz, APU students provide after-school tutoring and other recreational activities to children in a local apartment complex located on Cerritos Avenue in Azusa. S.E.E.D. focuses on issues of the environment in collaboration with the San Gabriel Mountain Regional Conservancy. By helping with trail clean-ups, school field trips, and educational classes at local elementary schools in the Azusa Unified School District, participants demonstrate the importance of environmental stewardship.
