APU Professor Awarded Scholarly Achievement Award

AZUSA, Calif. –
Duarte, Calif. resident Kimasi Browne, Ph.D., director of ethnomusicology at Azusa Pacific University, received the Graduate Scholarly Achievement Award for 2007, which recognizes Browne's excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
"Dr. Browne is internationally recognized for the excellence of his personal scholarship," said Rose Liegler, Ph.D., vice provost for adult and professional studies. "He is a respected scholar who regularly presents lectures at international conferences on British underground youth culture, African American soul music, and Gospel music. He is also an internationally recognized composer, arranger, singer, and conductor."
Browne holds a bachelor's degree in music composition from California State Polytechnic University. He also received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology, both from the University of California, Los Angeles. Since joining Azusa Pacific University in fall 2001, and in addition to conducting the Gospel Choir, Browne has developed a series called "World Music at APU" that has brought to campus traditional master-musicians from Bulgaria, India, Hong Kong, China, and Mediterranean Italy. He is currently developing an ethnomusicology emphasis for APU's School of Music.
