APU Nursing Faculty Receives Fulbright Scholarship to Conduct Research in Norway

April 24, 2008

AZUSA, Calif. –

Glendora, Calif.-resident Pamela Cone, Ph.D., RN, CNS, Azusa Pacific University assistant professor and director of international programs for nursing, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Cone is the third APU faculty member to receive this award and the second from the School of Nursing.

Cone’s scholarship will take her to the University of Bergen, Norway, where she will teach qualitative methods of research with a focus on grounded theory, as well as serving as a methodologist for doctoral students in the university’s nursing school. Her primary research involves a study of nursing students, faculty, and alumni, exploring the preparation for spiritual care-giving that nurses believe they receive during their nursing education. The award grants Cone six months of study beginning in August 2008.

While attending an APU conference on the topic of spiritual care, Cone met a Bergen nursing professor. “One day, I received an email from the University of Bergen, asking for input on the area of spiritual care and the preparation nursing students receive,” said Cone. “I replied with suggestions and they asked me if I could help with their research.” She then traveled to the university and completed an assistantship in grounded theory work. Cone maintained her Bergen ties, returning in 2006 as a keynote speaker for a nursing workshop.

“I am very excited about this opportunity, learning and researching a topic I am passionate about,” said Cone.

“The Faculty Fulbright Scholarship testifies to Dr. Cone’s skill and expertise, as well as a vote of confidence in her ability to carry out this international award as a top American researcher,” said Diane Guido, Ph.D., vice provost for undergraduate programs and Fulbright Program advisor. “It is an honor for Dr. Cone to receive such an award, and it reflects well on the high caliber of our faculty at APU.”

Cone, the daughter of a missionary and theology professor, was raised in the Republic of Haiti. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Alderson-Broaddus College, Philippi, W.Va., and a Master of Science in Nursing from Azusa Pacific. She earned a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco. Cone has served as a professor in the School of Nursing at APU since 1992.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, seeks to increase the mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Established in 1946, it is the largest U.S. international exchange program for students, scholars, and professionals with the opportunity for graduate study, advanced research, and teaching.
