28th Annual History Day L.A. Sees Increase in Participants

March 10, 2008

AZUSA, Calif. –

  • More than 650 L.A. County student participants
  • Local Azusa, Glendora, Covina school districts participating
  • Photo opportunities with historical re-enactment groups

On Saturday, March 15, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Azusa Pacific University will host the 28th annual History Day L.A., a history based learning experience and scholastic competition for Los Angeles County students grades 4-12.

This year, more than 650 students will participate, an increase from last year’s 600 participants. Nearly 2,400 total people are expected to attend. Also, for the first time, students from Glendora and Covina unified school districts, as well as Light & Life Christian School, will participate.

History Day L.A gives students an opportunity to explore history by applying this year’s theme, Conflict and Compromise in History, to creative and original productions. The issues, ideas, people, and events in history students learn about are presented in a final product through a performance, exhibit, or creation of their own webpage.

Throughout the day, several re-enactments will take place on the West Campus lawn to give students a tangible representation of the events they study in textbooks. In addition to civil war soldiers, a printing press, and the Heritage Trails group, this year brings the New Buffalo Soldiers and their horses for demonstrations of the all African American post civil war soldiers.

This is the third consecutive year APU has served as the host. In preparation for the event, Jim Thompson, Ed.D., associate professor of art, and APU’s Center for Academic Service Learning and Research worked with local schools to design artwork representing the History Day theme. The artwork will be displayed at the awards assembly.

The event takes place on APU’s West Campus, located at 701 E. Foothill Blvd. Presentations run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. An awards ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in the Felix Event Center. Reporters interested in attending may contact Allison Oster at (626) 815-4518.
