A Tribute to Bach: School of Music Celebrates the Masters

November 4, 2005

AZUSA, Calif. –

Azusa Pacific University's School of Music launches a new annual tradition with "Celebrating the Masters: Bach Woche," a weeklong tribute and concert series recognizing the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach on Nov. 14-18.

Each year, the weeklong festivities highlight the life, music, and commitment to God of a different composer in an effort to validate the connection between musical excellence and godly service. For November's Bach Woche, the School of Music welcomes guest musicians, Randolph Hokanson, concert pianist and professor emeritus of music at the University of Washington; and Jane Thorngran, soprano and accomplished international opera and concert performer, to join APU's ensembles in musical tribute to Bach. The School of Music's newest ensemble, the Collegium Chamber Orchestra initiates the week's musical presentations in their premier performance featuring the complete Brandenburg Concerti on Tues., Nov. 15.

"J. S. Bach brought to us monumental musical works inspired by his deep, committed faith in God," said Duane Funderburk, DMA, dean of APU's School of Music. "Throughout his music, his faith is clearly evidenced through a dedication to soli Deo Gloria, 'glory to God alone.'"
