Celebration of the Arts, sponsored by several of APU’s academic areas, is an evening dedicated to expanding and enriching students’ and community’s view of the arts.
FACTS:
- APU’s Wind Ensemble will perform Pictures at An Exhibition by Russian composer Modest Petrovich Moussorgsky while art students display various artwork. Students from APU’s forensics team will narrate the evening, introducing each movement of the musical selection.
- Modest Petrovich Moussorgsky (1839-81) was primarily a self-taught composer. Though his contemporaries accused him of lacking technique and education, today Moussorgsky is thought of as the great innovator of Russian music. Although he gained fame as a composer of opera and songs, Moussorgsky wrote a number of works for piano, including the suite Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874. The impetus for this series of piano pieces was a tragic occurrence in his life: the sudden death of a good friend, the architect and graphic artist Victor Hartmann, in 1873. The following spring Moussorgsky attended a showing of Hartmann’s works, and it this visit that inspired him to compose Pictures at an Exhibition.
