History Comes to Life for L.A. County Youth

Azusa Pacific University and the Los Angeles County Office of Education will host the 29th annual History Day L.A. on Saturday, March 14 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This history-based learning experience and scholastic competition for Los Angeles County youth grades 4-12. The event takes place on APU’s West Campus, 701 E. Foothill Blvd., in Azusa.

- 47 Los Angeles County schools participating
- 22 school districts represented
- 5 private schools participating for the first time
Throughout the day, historical re-enactments will take place on the West Campus lawn to give students a tangible representation of the events they study in textbooks. Organizations on site include the New Buffalo Soldiers, Chinese Historical Society, Heritage Trails Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Come watch as students practice drills with the soldiers, learn how to make a quilt, and learn English Country dancing.
Students from each grade submitted projects for History Day L.A. that exemplify a historical theme. The projects, which include poster boards, presentations, and performances, are judged by community members and social science professionals.
Winners in the elementary, junior, and senior categories go on to compete at the California History Day. State winners in Junior and Senior categories then travel in June to the University of Maryland in June to participate in National History Day.
History Day L.A is part of a national program that gives students an opportunity to explore history through creative and original productions. This marks the fourth year Azusa Pacific has served as the host site.
