2009 International Music Institute: Bel Canto and the Art of Piano

Posted: June 9, 2009

The Institute

The International Music Institute (IMI) serves as a platform for exchange and exploration of the musical arts.  International performing artists and lecturers interact with the younger generation of performers in private lessons, master classes, and public concerts.  The Institute this year traces the connections between Bel Canto ("beautiful voice") and the piano.  The relationships between the beauty of the vocal line, the sound of the voice, and lines and shapes in visual art with piano performance will be explored in lessons, lectures and performances.

The Program

  • Four hours of master classes in solo repertoire
  • Two hours of chamber music coaching including duets, trios, quartets, etc.
  • Two voice lessons for pianists
  • Demonstrations on vocal coaching for pianists
  • Piano improvisation
  • Piano teaching laboratory
  • Lectures on music and aesthetics
  • Excursion to a prominent Los Angeles museum
