The APU School of Music, the APU School of Nursing, and the Office of Research hosts Medical Ethnomusicologist and author of multiple books, Dr. Gregory Barz, as the 2009 World Music Scholar-in-Residence.

Dr. Barz is Associate Professor of Musicology (Ethnomusicology), Divinity School, Graduate Department of Religion, and African American Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

He has published several books including Singing For Life: Music and HIV/AIDS in Uganda (Routledge), Music In East Africa (Oxford), and Performing Religion (Rodopi).

Dr. Barz received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Traditional World Music Album for his CD "Singing For Life: Songs of Hope, Healing, and HIV/AIDS  in Uganda," released by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

During his residency at Azusa Pacific University, Dr. Barz will greet music majors and nursing students and faculty to present lectures and lead discussions, both seminar and colloquium. His residency will conclude with a keynote lecture in Upper Turner Campus Center (UTCC) on the APU Main Campus with a reception to follow, on Friday evening, September 25.
