Since 2005, with support from the Office of the Provost and the Dean of the School of Music, with assistance from APU Adjunct Professor Ben Grahl and APU Web Designer Jason Shattuck, I have represented APU as one of the organizers of this upcoming history-making conference. It will include a plethora of the world's outstanding specialists in African and African American Music Studies. In addition to the scholarly sessions, registered symposium participants who select to may also attend a special exhibition and reception at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History or take a tour of Central Avenue where jazz history was made in Los Angeles. The Festival of free concerts will feature UCLA Ethnomusicology Ensembles (including the guitar Grammy award-winning Kenny Burrell). Concerts will be given by classic art musicians and traditional artists from Jamaica, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and the US (including the UCLA Philharmonia conducted by Neal Stulberg). Keynote addresses will be given by J.H. Kwabena Nketia (Institute of African Music and Dance/University of Ghana) and Mosunmola Omibiyi-Obidike (Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria)
