Scholarships and Auditions

Opera Scholarships

Thank you for considering being a part of APU Opera and the School of Music! A limited number of partial scholarships are awarded to students showing promise as a singer/performer in the field of opera. It is our hope that these partial scholarships express our enthusiasm for having you study with us.

APU Opera scholarship recipients are required to participate as cast in opera productions and to conduct themselves as exemplary and professional young artists in all opera rehearsals, workshops, and performances.

Scholarship Auditions

To apply for an opera scholarship, prospective students must complete the Opera Audition and Scholarship Application (PDF) by Friday, March 1, 2013. Any submissions received after March 1 will be considered as funds permit. Students must audition in person or via mail by submitting a resume, photo, and DVD. Materials will not be returned to applicants. In-person auditions are held on campus at each of the APU All Access events, or appointments may be scheduled through the School of Music by calling (626) 815-3848. Students should specify that they wish to have an opera scholarship audition and interview.

Attend a special “Visit APU Opera” event on Friday, February 8, where you can audition for scholarships and participate in special events and informational workshops on the university, the School of Music, and the opera program.

Or plan to attend one of the APU Opera performances, and call ahead to schedule a vocal audition for the same day.

Scholarship Audition Requirements

Perform three songs in contrasting styles and moods. Songs must be memorized. You may choose from the following:

If sending a DVD, it should contain a short introduction of you speaking directly into the camera and then performing.

For more information about scheduling an opera scholarship audition, please call (626) 815-3848. For more information about opera scholarships in general, please contact Melanie Galloway, DMA, artistic director of opera, at mgalloway@apu.edu.

Other Scholarships

High school seniors and transfer undergraduate students may receive additional APU Opera scholarships by successfully competing in the Classical Singer National Competition. APU will host one of the preliminary rounds on campus on Saturday, February 9, 2013.

Opera Production Auditions

Auditions are open to all APU students that are or will be studying voice with an APU voice faculty member. You do not have to be a vocal performance music major to audition. Undergraduates are eligible to audition all four years of their undergraduate program. Auditions occur on campus in the spring of the upcoming year.

Any incoming student (freshman or transfer) that is not in the area at the time of the auditions may either have their opera scholarship audition double as their opera production audition, or may send a DVD or CD with a resume, head shot, and requested audition selections (see Scholarship Audition Requirements above).

If you have any questions regarding opera production auditions, please contact Melanie Galloway, DMA, artistic director of opera, at mgalloway@apu.edu.
