About the Program
Why This Major Is Relevant
The rise of the digital age has brought with it a multitude of opportunities for music majors. Musical expertise is no longer only relevant in the concert hall. Computer games, movies, television, radio, recording studios, multimedia church services, and businesses all call for professionals who understand music as an art form while mastering the technology with which it is made, produced, supported, and distributed. APU music majors are uniquely positioned to take advantage of this trend. The music curriculum intentionally integrates the latest musical technology into classroom learning, equipping students to provide the necessary musical and technological expertise in a wide variety of career paths.
The B.A. in Music offers three emphases. The music education emphasis prepares students to help meet the demand for teachers who possess music skills in elementary and secondary schools in both the public and private sectors. The performance emphasis serves the needs of those students who wish to teach privately, consider a career as a full-time performer, or teach applied lessons at the college level. The music theory emphasis gives a foundation to those seeking a career in music writing and arranging.
Gain In-depth Learning Experiences
All music majors are required to own an Apple MacBook Pro with music software programs. These Laptop Requirements are part of the integration of technology into the music teaching/learning process, and ensures that students learn more effectively while becoming competent with practical music technology.
APU’s proximity to Hollywood, the Los Angeles music industry, local school districts, and many churches provides music majors with ample internship opportunities. Internships ensure that music majors graduate with contacts in their chosen field, solid evidence of their skills, and substantial experience on their résumés.
