Karen E. Schaid joined the faculty of APU in summer of 2011 at the High Desert Regional Center. Her passion is to provide a reality based nursing education for traditional BSN nursing students. Karen is teaching in the Traditional 2 plus 2 BSN program with focus in Adult Health and Simulation.
Through her 30 years in nursing practice, Karen has worked in primarily one major, nationally recognized, health care system. During these years she has spent 17 years as a nurse educator with 9 years as faculty in the Saint Luke’s College- a premier BSN program. As the Director of the Learning Center, she was responsible for the Skills lab, Library, Computer lab and classroom audio-visual equipment in addition to teaching. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002 and 2006 and was a member of the curriculum committee for all 15 years of service in nursing education at SLHS.
In clinical practice at Saint Luke’s HS, Karen worked in the Cardiovascular ICU and Medical ICU in bedside care of critically ill. For 3 years she was the Clinical Nurse Manager of a Medical- Pulmonary floor with care of Ventilator patients and supervised an interdisciplinary staff of 40 persons. In 1999, she received an award for Excellence in Nursing Practice. She has served on various hospital committees including Policy and Procedure and Multidisciplinary Education and continued a PRN position in the MICU for the last 11 years while in full time BSN Nursing Education.
For three years from 2008 – 2011, Karen served as Associate Professor and Interim Dept. Chair of the BSN traditional program at MidAmerica Nazarene Univ. During these years she was instrumental in developing the Simulation Studio with 2 High fidelity manikins and engaging students and faculty in learning through this exciting method. At MNU, she highly valued the freedom to profess her Christian faith with students and to honor God in the teaching of nursing.
