Patricia Esslin, PhD, APRN-CNS, CNE, possesses a commitment to the future of nursing which is evident in her leadership, clinical practice, research and educator roles. Dr. Esslin is a doctorally prepared clinician with extensive experience in medical surgical, oncology, and restorative nursing. She strives to dynamically engage nursing students in the learning process, as the lead instructor for the medical-surgical Nursing Management Complex course (UNRS312) in APU's undergraduate nursing program where she teaches both lecture and clinical. Dr. Esslin is a gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist and serves as the School of Nursing Gerontology content expert. She is also a Certified Nurse Educator. She is active in professional nursing organizations—such as the Oncology Nursing Society, and Iota Sigma, the local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International-and encourages her students to do likewise. Dr. Esslin was honored at the 2007 American Society for Pain Management Nurses (ASPMN) conference for her leadership and service to the Southern California Chapter of ASPMN, receiving the National Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Esslin's doctoral work centered on instrument development in which she developed a subjective instrument for prelicensure nursing students to self-evaluate a key Quality and Safety Education for nurses (QSEN) competency, patient-centered care.
